Senior Satellite Communications Technician

ROLE DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
Provide first-level technical support for all customer service/ teleport operation, installation, and maintenance processes at South Mountain Earth Station, Somis, California. Coordinate team shift and task schedules.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES / KEY RESULT AREAS
- Fabrication, installation, maintenance, and repair of the radio-frequency (RF) equipment used in large-scale satellite downlink and uplink operations; such as waveguide assemblies, cables, and fiber-optic systems. Performs component-level troubleshooting required on High-Power Amplifiers (HPA), fiber-optic systems, upconverters, downconverters, RF switching units, Antenna Control Units (ACUs), Low-Noise Amplifiers (LNAs) and Low-Noise Block Downconverters (LNBs) and switching and/or monitoring audio/video equipment. Performs maintenance and repair on large transmit/receive and receive-only satellite antenna systems. Provide sketches of drawings required for equipment installation.
- System level and bench level electronics troubleshooting experience.
- Operational configurations awareness and routine preventative maintenance skills required.
- Assist the site manager in daily operations oversight—as required.
- Provide operational continuity in manager’s absence.
- Maintain team shift scheduling with the manager and must be able to perform occasional shift work as directed in scheduled events, anomalies and manpower deficit.
- Maintain the use of a company-provided phone in the event of necessary remote support.
- Ability to read and interpret schematics, assemble wave guide systems, efficiently utilize sophisticated test equipment, perform documentation tasks, and successfully interact with management & engineers.
- Coordinate team and perform moderately complex on-site installations, customer remote support requests, preventative maintenance and routine repair of electronic and electromechanical equipment such as: up/down converters, HPA's, fiber optic subsystems, LNA/LNB's, antennas, IP and Baseband equipment (modems, multiplexers, DVB and Broadband technology platforms) and video systems. Pro-actively monitor the conditions of commercial services and terrestrial facilities, including the status of system alarms including station plant and facility subsystems.
- Manage networks controlling, monitoring, and distributing digitally encoded audio/video content. Evaluate and troubleshoot the transmission of digital video signals across local and wide area networks utilizing TCP/IP and fiber networks. Required to assist and complete daily activity reports and maintain department documentation.
- Repair, test, adjust, or install electronic equipment, such as industrial controls, transmitters, and antennas.
- Apply electrical and electronic theory and related knowledge, usually under the direction of engineering staff, to build, repair, calibrate, and modify electrical components, circuitry, controls, and machinery.
- Operate, install, calibrate, and maintain integrated computer/communications systems consoles, simulators, and other data acquisition, test, and measurement instruments and equipment to launch, track, position, and evaluate air and space vehicles. May record and interpret test data.
- Prepare wiring diagrams, and layout drawings used for installation, and repair of electrical equipment in facilities. Create, Update and Maintain procedures and records.
- Set up, operate, and maintain the electronic equipment used to uplink and downlink digital services in the L, C, Ku, Ka Bands, including Matrix, Baseband Modulators, Fiber Optic Transceivers, Frequency Converters, Amplifiers and RF Path Analysis.

- Ability to cover shift work if required and be on call 24x7x365 for off-hours emergencies
- Ability to lift at least 50 pounds and climb ladders

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- 3 years of satellite communication technical experience is preferred
- 3 years of teleport /earth station experience is preferred
- Technical or military training in electronics or communication systems
OTHER KEY REQUIREMENTS / COMMENTS
- Meet 99.98% annual South Mountain teleport availability
- Meet 100% TT&C availability
- Complete assigned South Mountain station projects on-time, to-spec, on-budget
