Systems Engineer, IRIS2 Constellation Simulations
ROLE DESCRIPTION
IRIS2 is the new European Union secure satellite constellation. This project is the European Union's answer to the pressing challenges of tomorrow to provide secure connectivity services and enhanced communication capacities to the EU and its Member States as well as to governmental users, private companies and European citizens while ensuring high-speed internet broadband to cope with connectivity dead zones. SES – together with other consortium partners and core members - was selected by European Commission to build and to operate the IRIS2 multi-orbit satellite constellation. The IRIS2 team enters next project phases and there is a strong need of support for all the activities around service provisioning and products that the system can offer in the future. The IRIS2 constellation will also be used for SES commercial business.
The Systems Engineering team is responsible to build, maintain and deploy a toolbox that allows for data-driven decision making regarding the market, product and architecture fit of future satellite communication infrastructure at SES. This toolbox is instrumental to make the best decisions in how to build future satellite infrastructure at SES. We want to build models to predict where they will be and how they consume content in the future.
As a candidate, you must be eligible for a “SECRET” security clearance, in accordance with the “loi modifiée du 15 juin 2004 relative à la classification des pièces et aux habilitations de sécurité”, as well as EU/ESA/NATO equivalents. You will work in an agile project organization where a flexible way of working and an adaptive mindset is required. You need to be willing to work at least 66% onsite from office and travel as required for project realization purposes.
As a Systems Engineer, you will be responsible to:
- Developing, maintaining and deploying global geotemporal traffic models (detailed demand models of satcom connectivity) for each market segment that SES operates in. SES serves thousands of aircraft, hundreds of ships and many more stationary sites across the globe.
- Develop software simulating satellite constellations and the communication links to a population of diverse user terminals
- Develop and maintain traffic models covering the mobility, government and fixed data market segments
- Develop User Interfaces allowing multiple people in the organization to use the simulation and traffic model tools
- Perform trade-off analyses between captured market demand, product and satellite infrastructure to come up with the best satellite infrastructure solution
- Transform large raw data sets into insights using interactive visualizations
- Manage the simulation software CI/CD process on Azure in collaboration with the SES IT team
- Ability to work independently and with limited supervision in complex environments, e.g. project or matrix organizations
- Flexibility and adaptability in response to changing project requirements and environments
- Ability to think strategically and align project goals with organizational objectives
- Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal
- Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities
