Senior Engineer, Systems Engineering Requirements, IRIS2
PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION
IRIS2 is the new European Union secure satellite constellation. This project is the European Union's answer to the pressing challenges of tomorrow to provide secure connectivity services and enhanced communication capacities to the EU and its Member States. In addition, as well as to governmental users, private companies and European citizens while benefiting from ensuring high-speed internet broadband to cope with connectivity dead zones.
SES – together with other consortium partners and core members - was selected by the European Commission to build and to operate the IRIS2 multi-orbit satellite constellation.
The IRIS2 team enters next project phases, we seek and there is a strong need of support for all the activities around service provisioning and products that the system can offer in the future.
ROLE DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
The System Engineering Requirements Responsible Engineer is responsible for analysing, specifying, structuring, and maintaining system-level requirements for complex telecom and satellite systems. The role focuses on functional and non-functional requirements, requirements traceability, requirements reporting, MBSE-based engineering practices, and tool-based management of engineering baselines using tools such as JAMA and JIRA.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES / KEY RESULT AREAS
- Analyse stakeholder, service, system, and subsystem inputs and transform them into clear, consistent, complete, and testable system requirements.
- Define and maintain functional and non-functional requirements covering performance, availability, operability, maintainability, security, interfaces, monitoring, and verification needs.
- Manage requirements baselines, traceability, change impact analysis, compliance matrices, gap lists, and requirements maturity reporting using JAMA, JIRA, or equivalent tools.
- Support MBSE activities, including functional decomposition, use-case modelling, operational scenarios, architecture-to-requirement mapping, and verification planning.
- Coordinate with system, software, RAN, core network, ground segment, operations, and IVV teams to ensure requirements are allocated to the right subsystems and translated into verifiable acceptance criteria.
Qualifications Background and Experience
Qualification Basis
- Master’s degree in engineering or science, preferably in Systems Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Software Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
- 10+ years of relevant industry experience is required.
- Strong knowledge of system engineering practices, requirements analysis, functional and non-functional requirements specification, verification and validation principles, and MBSE methods.
- Proven experience using requirements and project management tools such as JAMA, JIRA, DOORS, Confluence, or equivalent environments.
- Experience in telecom, satellite communications, aerospace, defence, or other complex system programmes required; for Senior EngineerFluent in English, other languages are an upside
Essential experience
- Hands-on experience analysing, writing, reviewing, and maintaining system requirements in a structured engineering lifecycle.
- Strong ability to distinguish, structure, and report functional and non-functional requirements, including performance, reliability, availability, maintainability, security, and operational constraints.
- Experience defining requirement attributes, acceptance criteria, verification methods, traceability links, coverage status, and compliance evidence.
- Practical knowledge of MBSE concepts, system decomposition, interface definition, operational scenarios, use cases, and architecture-to-requirement consistency checks.
- Ability to work with cross-domain technical teams and suppliers to identify gaps, overlaps, inconsistencies, risks, and change impacts across the requirement set.
Highly desirable experience (several of the following):
- Experience with 5G, 5G-NTN, satellite communications, RAN, core network, ground segment, or complex telecom system engineering programmes.
- Experience preparing requirement baselines for RFI, RFP, RFQ, supplier evaluation, compliance analysis, or contract-level technical documentation.
- Experience configuring or using JAMA/JIRA workflows, dashboards, filters, reports, and review processes for engineering governance.
- Knowledge of V-model development, IVV planning, test case derivation, verification closure, and requirements-based acceptance management.
Proven work attitude:
- Management of technology development, work with cross discipline teams (system engineers, software experts, RAN experts, core network experts, satellite experts, IVV teams, procurement, sales, business experts, etc.)
- Research and Development project management experience, including coordination of requirement reviews, technical studies, and supplier interactions.
- Communication skills, ability to explain complex system requirements, requirement gaps, risks, and verification status to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write clear requirement statements, reports, review minutes, and decision records.
- Commitment to deadlines and willingness to meet tight development, review, procurement, and delivery schedules.
OTHER KEY REQUIREMENTS / COMMENTS
- The candidate must be eligible for a “SECRET” security clearance, in accordance with the national regulations as well as EU/ESA/NATO equivalents
- Willing to work 60% onsite from office
- Travel as required for project realization purposes
