Senior Engineer, Quantum-Secure Networks

Role Description Summary

The Senior Engineer, Quantum-Secure Networks is the main interface between the System Architecture and Solutions Engineering teams. The objective is to use a diversity of approaches, backgrounds and perspectives to find innovative high-impact technologies in order to deliver state of the art solutions to our external and internal customers and achieve the target revenue growth and profitability.

Key activities include the technical and security aspects of Quantum Key Distribution Networks (QKDN), both terrestrial and space-based. The incumbent will define system architecture best practices and guide the Solutions Engineering team in selecting and developing the technology most appropriate to the successful realisation of complex interdisciplinary customer projects and services.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Act as a focal point within SES Techcom for the selection and development of technologies and architectures best suited for the effective realisation of SES Techcom solutions and services
  • Establish engineering best practices and drive their implementation and improvement
  • Lead the technical activities within the SES Techcom Quantum Programme Office in order to develop the Quantum Safe Network Pillar
  • Work closely with Solutions Engineering and Software Solutions Engineering team in identifying and applying synergies between different projects and programmes.
  • Research technology and technical solutions addressing customer needs, and recommend solutions that add the most value for both the customer and SES Techcom
  • Lead the research, design, and implementation of state-of-the-art quantum secure communication systems.
  • Maintain awareness and evaluation of relevant technological developments, market trends, competitive factors, customer requirements, standardisation licensing and regulatory aspects
  • Work closely with other teams to identify potentially valuable intellectual property and prepare patent applications where relevant
  • Provide recommendation aiming at continuously improving SES Techcom perspectives of development, effectiveness, and growth
  • Perform technical analysis and design of Quantum Key Distribution Networks (QKDN), encompassing both terrestrial and space-based systems, at both the system and subsystem levels, with a particular focus on optimising interfaces among diverse internal and external entities.
  • Analyze, engineer, maintain and refine the cybersecurity aspect for an operation of a secure, efficient, and effective operation for both present and future platforms and customer solutions Develop strategic plans for quantum initiatives, ensuring they meet company objectives
  • Proactively identify and strategize against risks in quantum programme delivery.
  • Architect and deliver advanced quantum communication systems, including ground and satellite operations, with a focus on integration and compatibility
  • Develop and maintain robust security measures across all systems and their lifecycles
  • Develop new opportunities centred on quantum communication infrastructure and the advancement of SES Techcom's existing and future technological services
  • Assess system and application security requirements, threats, vulnerabilities and security risks in complex, heterogeneous systems and throughout their life cycle;
  • Support the definition of policies, processes, procedures, configuration baselines and guidelines to ensure appropriate security risk management throughout the system life cycle;
  • Perform technical security assessments of systems and applications to identify vulnerabilities and non-compliance with established security standards and recommend effective mitigation strategies;

Qualification & Experience

  • Master’s Degree in Mathematics, Electronics, or Telecommunications Engineering similar field (a combination of experience and education will be considered).
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Strong knowledge on Quantum Key Distribution Networks, and the security related to it.
  • Knowledge of cryptography and cryptographic key management concepts.
  • Knowledge of information security systems engineering principles
  • Experienced in security principles, methodologies, and firewall configuration, including proficiency with Cisco, Juniper, and/or Checkpoint systems. Possession of certifications such as CCNSA, CCNP, JNCIP, or JNCIS is viewed favourably.
  • Familiar with network traffic flows and the configuration of networking equipment (Cisco and/or Juniper)
  • Good knowledge of security architecture concepts and enterprise architecture reference models
  • Familiar with Windows and Linux operating system, virtualization platforms, cloud computing;
  • Expertise in the following fields is considered an asset:
    • Optical communications
    • Cryptography
    • Key Management Systems
    • ISO standards ISO2700x, ISO27017, ISO 31000.
    • Knowledge of NIS 2 Directive
    • GEO, MEO, or LEO satellite ground systems
  • Background in partnering with engineering, operations, and program management teams
  • Fluency in English, any other EU language is considered as an asset.
  • Be willing to travel within Europe

  • Main interfaces to other departments: “Business Development”, “Finance and Operations”, “Project Management”, “Solutions Engineering”, “Software Engineering”
  • Eligibility for ESA/EU/NATO SECRET clearances is necessary. Candidate must be willing to undergo a security clearance procedure as this position might require holding security clearance.
