PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION

 

IRIS² is the new European Union secure satellite constellation. This project is the European Union's answer to the pressing challenges of tomorrow to provide secure connectivity services and enhanced communication capacities to the EU and its Member States as well as to governmental users, private companies and European citizens while ensuring high-speed internet broadband to cope with connectivity dead zones.

 

SES – together with other consortium partners and core members – has been selected by European Commission to build and to operate the IRIS² multi-orbit satellite constellation.

As the project enters its execution phase, our team is expanding to support the development of future services and products enabled by the IRIS² system. We are seeking skilled professionals to help shape the service provisioning landscape and ensure the successful deployment of cutting-edge satellite connectivity solutions.

 

ROLE DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

We are seeking a highly motivated, skilled and experienced MEO Spacecraft Engineer to oversee the development and delivery of the spacecraft and engineering work products within the IRIS² programme. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the technical integrity and performance of the spacecraft within the IRIS² constellation, working closely with internal teams, industrial partners, and institutional stakeholders.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES / KEY RESULT AREAS

 

  • Lead and participate in the technical assessment related to spacecraft platform units and subsystem definition and development, requirements, analysis, trade-offs, budgets, validation, tests and integration
  • Participate and contribute to daily activities with the spacecraft platform supplier
  • Lead/participate in design and test reviews (EQSR, PDR, CDR, MRR, TRR and TRB) to ensure the spacecraft design and production meet the specified requirements
  • Identify, assess & mitigate technical risks associated with spacecraft, develop contingency plans in close collaboration with the supplier’s and internal teams
  • Review supplier technical data packages for the spacecraft platform units, subsystems and system
  • Define and coordinate engineering support activities at system level for all aspects of the satellite bus; monitor & control interfaces between satellite subsystems (bus/platform) and other mission segments and suppliers
  • Ensure compliance with system-level requirements and ECSS standards, per the product assurance plans
  • Contribute to the successful achievement of the IRIS² programme milestones per the committed programme schedule

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

 

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering or related discipline
  • 10+/5+ years of experience in space systems engineering or spacecraft bus engineering
  • Deep knowledge of spacecraft bus systems (power, thermal, structure, avionics, propulsion, GNC, data handling, TT&C)
  • Solid experience working with a spacecraft bus supplier and in AIT environment
  • Strong experience of space product and quality assurance processes
  • Knowledge of ECSS standards and ability to apply them in supplier oversight
  • Proficiency in project management tools and methodologies
  • Eligibility to obtain security clearance

 

 

OTHER KEY REQUIREMENTS / COMMENTS

 

  • Eligibility for ESA/EU SECRET personnel security clearances is essential. Candidates must be prepared to undergo a security clearance procedure, as this position may require holding such clearance
  • Willing to work at least 60% onsite from office
  • Travel as required for project realization purposes (visits to suppliers abroad)
