Senior Counsel, Labor and Employment

ROLE DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

The incumbent reports to the Director, Labor & Employment Counsel and provides legal support to business leaders and Human Resources on a broad range of labour and employment law, benefits, litigation and privacy issues. The incumbent’s focus is the European Union and United Kingdom, and they may be called upon from time to time to provide support globally.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES / KEY RESULT AREAS

  • Advise and support the HR employee relations team with works councils, staff delegations and other collective labor matters.
  • Advise and support the HR Business Partners with labor and employment law matters.
  • Support drafting of employment agreement templates, severance agreements (and negotiation as required), incentive pay plans, benefits documents and third party vendor agreements related to Human Resources functions.
  • Oversee internal investigations and manage employment-related disputes and litigation.
  • Respond to claims, demand letters, subpoenas, audits and other employment-related inquiries.
  • Assess legal risk and provide management with recommendations regarding threatened and pending litigation.  Engage in pre-litigation dispute resolution efforts.
  • Review and aid outside counsel with litigation.
  • Partner with Human Resources to evaluate, develop and implement employment practices, policies and procedures in compliance with employment laws and regulations..
  • Handle other department responsibilities and compliance issues as directed by the  Director, Employment and Labor or the Chief Legal Officer.

  • Ability to evaluate risk, demonstrate a practical, solution-oriented approach to problem-solving, and effectively counsel internal clients by providing them with clear and concise recommendations.
  • Excellent organizational and follow-through skills; demonstrated ability to create, plan and successfully execute projects; ability to meet multiple time-sensitive deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, team-oriented attitude, and superior attention to detail. Ability to interface and communicate effectively and diplomatically with all levels of management.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Law Degree (LL.M.)
  • Luxembourg qualified lawyer
  • Training in Germany a plus
  • 7-10  years of relevant experience at a law firm or as in-house employment counsel
