Junior Engineer, IT Operations

ROLE DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

As a Junior Operations Engineer, you will work with more experienced engineers as part of a team developing skills, experience and applying your ability to implement appropriate solutions to incidents and requests.  You will be responsible for incident management and request fulfilment, ensuring they are resolved or escalated to the correct technical team whilst still retaining oversight of the responses.  You will undertake system monitoring and respond accordingly.  You will play an important role in delivering outstanding services to our business units, learning and performing routine tasks and duties that keep our platform stable and secure.

 

Extended Job Description:

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES / KEY RESULTS AREAS

  • Proactively monitor the SES internal IT Infrastructure through a diverse range of enterprise monitoring tools (Spectrum, Centreon, Cacti, Cisco Prime, HP Openview, Netbrain, …)
  • Perform ticket management for all ITSM processes ensuring they are allocated to the correct teams and learning to resolve the basics
  • Provide support to internal and external customers as required
  • Learn how to inspect LAN infrastructure and fix minor problems
  • Learn how to inspect Voice infrastructure and fix minor problems
  • Gain a broad understanding of all technologies covered in the IT Operations group
  • Implement appropriate contingency procedures in response to planned or unexpected events
  • Keep abreast of operational changes in a fluid environment ensuring that actions are taken inline with current best practices
  • Maintain standards and standard operating procedures
  • Use strong communication skills to articulate accurate information to technical and non-technical people in the course of addressing incidents and requests
  • Work actively with the Service Desk to help create troubleshooting procedures for common issues
  • Help create knowledge-based articles for common issues and for user self-help portal
  • Be able to understand all stakeholders in the service delivery process
  • Be willing to learn new technologies

 

COMPETENCIES

  • Understanding of computers, servers, IT systems, networks and VOIP
  • Understanding of Ip networking and common protocols
  • Ability to integrate into cross-functional and/or virtual project teams
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Appreciation of the principles of prioritisation according to service impact and the ability to work under pressure
  • Proactive approach towards potential and/or current customers
  • Good understanding of Operational Principles

 

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Baccalaureate
  • Minimum 2 years of professional experience in IT (e.g. working on a helpdesk, operations etc.) in a large heterogeneous environment
  • Technical understanding of the IT landscape and related technical skills
  • Hands-on experience with Cisco network devices, Windows or Linux servers an advantage
  • VOIP knowledge would be considered as an advantage
  • Broad knowledge of Information Security and knowledge of the specificities of the satellite industry
  • Fluency in English, any other language is considered as an asset
  • Willingness to travel internationally
