ROLE DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

 

SES is a leading innovator in the Quantum Key Distribution sector currently leading key initiiatives in this domain at European level.

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Optical Engineer Intern to join our Engineering Team. In this role, you will work closely with experienced optical engineers to design, test, and analyze optical components and systems with application in quantum key distribution networks. The ideal candidate has hands-on laboratory experience, a strong understanding of optical physics, and the ability to assist in the procurement and evaluation of new components. This is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in both optical measurement techniques and technical procurement.Briefly summarise the primary purpose of this job (business need) using no more than four sentences.

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES / KEY RESULT AREAS

 

  • Optical Measurements & Lab Work: Setup, align, and test optical components and subsystems (e.g., lasers, photonic integrated chips & fiber optics) in an R&D and production/insdustrial lab environment.
  • Familiarity with optical measurement equipment such as optical spectrum analyzers optical power meters and oscilloscopes.
  • Procurement Support: Define optical specifications to aid in the procurement of optical components. Evaluate vendor proposals and conduct sample testing to verify supplier components.
  • Data Analysis: Analyze test data and document results, providing actionable insights for design optimization.
  • Prototyping: Assist in building prototype opto-mechanical setups and aligning experimental test fixtures.
  • Documentation: Maintain meticulous records of measurements and create technical reports to present findings to the engineering team.

 

COMPETENCIES

 

  • Lab Skills: Proven hands-on experience in optical laboratory environments, including alignment techniques and handling sensitive components.
  • Software Proficiency: Familiarity with optical design tools and data analysis tools (Python, MATLAB).
  • Component Familiarity: Knowledge of optoelectronic devices (LEDs, Lasers, Detectors), optical fibre components.
  • Attention to Detail & Organization: Strong ability to document technical details and keep organized records of experiments and procurement lists. Good analytical skills.a Ability to sumamrize findings and present them in a coherent way either by analysis of experimental data and through validation with simulation data analysis tools.
  • Communication Skills: Effective verbal and written communication skills to present technical findings to team members.

 

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

 

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s/ Master’s/PhD degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Photonics, or related technical field.
  • Completion of fundamental optics coursework or electical engineering in the telecommunications area.
  • Proactive learning attitude and passion for applied optics. Fundamentally, the abiity to lear proactively and be trainable.
