Engineer, Software Solutions, Quantum Key Distribution

 

 SES Techcom is seeking a talented Software Engineer with expertise in Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) to join our growing team in Betzdorf. In this role, you will contribute to the development of SES’s next-generation QKD-based Key Management System (KMS), collaborating closely with experts across the quantum ecosystem to deliver cutting edge, quantum safe solutions for future commercial deployments.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design, develop, and maintain software components focused on QKD technologies.
  • Contribute to the definition and refinement of product features for the KMS platform.
  • Enhance and extend the enterprise-grade KMS, adding capabilities required for commercial, scalable, and secure service offerings.
  • Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary engineering team, adhering to modern software development best practices.

 

COMPETENCIES

  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience in software design, architecture, or analysis.
  • Proficiency in C++, Python, and/or Java.
  • Hands-on experience developing simulators or emulators for space systems.
  • Understanding of non-terrestrial systems, including deployment of space-based software and hardware.
  • Familiarity with embedded and real-time operating systems (RTOS).
  • Strong command of Git, modern version control workflows, and Linux-based development environments.
  • Solid grasp of the software development lifecycle (SDLC) and associated best practices.

 

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electronics, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of software engineering fundamentals, object-oriented design, and version control.
  • Proficiency in C++ (C++17 or later preferred).
  • Interest in embedded systems, secure communications, or aerospace applications.
  • Experience working in Linux environments and with debugging tools (e.g., GDB, Valgrind).
  • Curiosity, adaptability, and the ability to work effectively in an international, multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent communication skills in English.

 

Desirable (Nice-to-Have) Skills

  • Experience with real-time or embedded operating systems (RTOS, Linux Embedded, or similar).
  • Familiarity with cryptography or key management concepts.
  • Knowledge of networking protocols and inter-process communication.
  • Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python or Bash for automation and testing.
  • Experience with software verification and validation processes in regulated sectors (space, defense, avionics).
  • Basic understanding of cloud technologies or DevOps toolchains.
