ROLE DESCRIPTION
IRIS2 is the new European Union secure satellite constellation. This project is the European Union's answer to the pressing challenges of tomorrow to provide secure connectivity services and enhanced communication capacities to the EU and its Member States as well as to governmental users, private companies and European citizens while ensuring high-speed internet broadband to cope with connectivity dead zones.
SES – together with other consortium partners and core members - was selected by the European Commission to build and to operate the IRIS2 multi-orbit satellite constellation.
The IRIS2 team enters the next project phases, we seek and there is a strong need of support for all the activities around service provisioning and products that the system can offer in the future.
We are seeking a highly experienced Satellite Segment Lead to oversee our IRIS2 satellite segment systems engineering activities and to maintain the associated coherency.
In your role you are as well contributing to the SES commercial business and the SES’ next generation MEO constellation.
You are interacting with the EU, ESA, and project partners on satellite segment engineering matters, ensuring that we meet our contractual obligations, implement SES’ MEO vision, and protect SES’ interests.
In your role you are leading the design, development, and the deployment of the IRIS2 satellite segment, ensuring technical excellence and alignment with organizational goals.
You will work in an agile project organization where a flexible way of working, and an adaptive mindset is required.
The candidate must be eligible for a “SECRET” security clearance, in accordance with the “loi modifiée du 15 juin 2004 relative à la classification des pièces et aux habilitations de sécurité”, as well as EU/ESA/NATO equivalents. The candidate must be willing to work at least 66% onsite from office and travel as required for project realization purposes.
As a Senior System Engineer, you will be responsible to:
- Lead technical Satellite Segment System Architecture in the framework of IRIS2
- Coordinate the work of SES technical teams working on space segment subsystems:
- Satellite Platform including power and thermal subsystem, avionics, propulsion
- Satellite Payload including On Board Processor, Active Antennas, Optical Terminals
- Lead satellite segment development plans, deployment, validation and progressive upscaling
- Lead production by the team of all technical deliverables for IRIS2 as well as MEO Space Segment
- Lead technical interaction with industrial partners required for the development of space segment subsystems required in the proposed architecture (initiating subsystems RFIs as appropriate)
- Support Satellite Procurement activities implementing the proposed Architecture (including RFIs/RFPs)
- Support preparation of satellite operations aligned with the proposed architecture
- Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements
- Manage project timelines, budgets, and resources to meet milestones and deliverables
- Conduct risk assessments and implement mitigation strategies
- Collaborate with stakeholders to define ground segment requirements and ensure alignment with organizational objectives
YOUR PROFILE
1 – MUST HAVE
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, or a related field
- Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience
- Proven experience in satellite hardware and software engineering
- Strong understanding of payload technologies including active antennas, communication processors and optical communication terminals
- Good understanding of satellite platform technologies including avionics, propulsion, solar panels, power subsystem, thermal subsystem
- Good understanding of satellite operations
- Good understanding of NGSO constellations
- Experience in evaluating CAPEX and OPEX
- Familiarity with hardware and software development and in end to end systems integration
- Strong ability to work independently and without supervision in complex environments, e.g. project or matrix organizations
- Flexibility and adaptability in response to changing project requirements and environments
- Ability to think strategically and align project goals with organizational objectives
- Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal
- Strong leadership leveraging proven project and team management skills
- Ability to generate high-level requirements and identify key industrial partners
- In-depth knowledge of satellite communication systems with an end-to-end view
- Proficiency in project management tools and methodologies
- Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities
