Contract Type:  Permanent
Location(s):

Betzdorf, LU

(Senior) Engineer, gNB, MEO

ProgramME & Role Description

MEO100 is the next generation of SES’s Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) satellite constellation. It will provide secure connectivity services to governmental entities, private companies, and commercial customers, while delivering high-speed broadband internet to eliminate connectivity dead zones.

We are seeking a dynamic and visionary leader to join our rapidly growing aerospace team. To accelerate schedules, reduce costs, and guarantee quality, SES is internalising a critical segment of the supply chain: the final integration of partner satellite platforms with SES’s software-defined payload, all within a state-of-the-art manufacturing and test facility.

We are looking for a talented and detail-oriented Regenerative gNodeB (gNB) Responsible Engineer for the design and development of the in-orbit portion of the 5G NTN gNB for our meoSphere constellation. You will define the system architecture, focusing on hardware and software interfaces and OAM frameworks, to support the integration of a high-performance, resilient, and scalable solution. The gNB hardware and software platforms are to be implemented on-board the satellite, requiring close coordination across space and ground segment teams. You will lead and coordinate the development, implementation and validation of the on-board 5G gNB. This role demands a deep understanding of the 5G ecosystem and the ability to translate complex system requirements into a cohesive architectural vision.

As a (Senior) Engineer, gNB, MEO, you will be responsible for :

  • System Architecture Definition: Lead the architectural design of the regenerative 5G NTN gNB, ensuring alignment with the overall meoSphere system goals and requirements.
  • Hardware & Software Integration: Define and specify the hardware platforms and software interfaces required for on-board satellite implementation. Ensure the correct mapping and sizing of 5G NTN functions onto the selected hardware, creating a robust and efficient system.
  • Development & Validation Leadership: Lead the development, integration, and both on-ground and in-orbit validation of the 5G gNB, ensuring performance, reliability, and compliance with system requirements.
  • Vendor Ecosystem Management: Drive the technical evaluation, selection, and management of hardware and software vendors within the 5G ecosystem. Leverage your deep industry knowledge to identify the best partners and solutions.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Serve as the primary technical interface between hardware (L1) and software (L2/L3) engineering teams to ensure seamless integration and alignment.
  • O-RAN Integration: Serve as the primary technical interface with the OAM framework architect, defining applications and interfaces consistent with O-RAN principles to ensure network operability and manageability.
  • Technical Guidance: Provide expert guidance on 5G NTN technologies, baseband and network processing.

YOUR PROFILE :

  1. MUST HAVE
  • Advanced degree (PhD or Master's) in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related technical field.
  • Extensive experience in telecommunications, with a proven track record in system architecture for 5G RAN and/or satellite communication systems.
  • Deep technical expertise in 5G and 5G NTN standards (3GPP), technologies, and network architecture.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the 5G vendor ecosystem for both hardware (e.g., baseband processors, RF front-ends) and software components.
  • Demonstrated experience in defining and specifying hardware and software interfaces for complex communication systems.
  • Active participation in standardization bodies such as 3GPP, or the O-RAN Alliance.
  • Hands-on experience developing 5G gNB SW and HW products.
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional technical teams and drive complex projects to completion.
  • Direct experience leading technical aspects of RFP processes, including vendor evaluation, negotiation, and selection.
  • Fluency in English;
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities
  • High sensitivity to customers’ needs and capacity to find solutions to complex technical problems and overcome obstacles to deliver a high quality of service

  1. NICE TO HAVE
  • Additional languages are a plus.

Other requirements

  • The candidate must be eligible for a “SECRET” security clearance, in accordance with the “loi modifiée du 15 juin 2004 relative à la classification des pièces et aux habilitations de sécurité”, as well as EU/ESA/NATO equivalents
